California

Jimmy: I'm so sick of it, man. You see what they treat us like? I'm not nothing, man, I am something, I'm am somebody. I'm sick them trying to put us into this little box, I'm never gonna be like that. All I need is the ocean, the surf and the sand man, that's all I need. All these people down here, look at them, they all think they're something, but all they're doing is putting on an act. I wish everyone in this country could see what these people are really like instead of just what they see on T.V. and in the magazines. If people would see how they're nothing with out writers and make up, that they're nothing but a bunch of dressed up dolls, maybe they'd stop wishing they were like them, its not worth it. I'm glad we grew up here man, that's how we know we're real, I don't need anybody telling me I'm something, I know I am. I am something! I am something you motherfuckers! Fuck. Let's go to the beach.

I used to work there

I used to work downtown too. Big project, I'm a construction guy. My company used to put the highways in, big projects. I know right where you're talking about because I had to move all those people. Not physically, but they had to move to the those projects we gave them. Who would have ever scoffed at free housing, no rats, not roaches, for a while. We really thought things would get better, we really did, but I'm not sure if they did. All you can do in this life is guess, really.

Don't be such a cry baby...

Come in, sit down. No,look, you don't have to defend yourself. We all get a little bored around here now and then, we all fuck around, but what you did was over the line is all. All those guys out there have been here for years, so its gonna be hard for you. We brought you on this department because you're good, don't let them tell you any different. There is a lot of down time here, so your gonna have it rough for a little while, but what I'm saying is 'don't give in'. No matter how much the mess with ya, whatever they do, take it and don't make it a big deal, then... get them back. Don't just start swingin, you haven't been here long enough for that. But, you have my permission to get even. Nothing crazy please, we had one guy slashed up McGreyson's tires, we had to fire him. Keep it friendly, I have faith in you, I'll back ya up. You got any ideas?

I dont have much to say sometimes

Butch: (in a laundromat) I don't have much to say sometimes, which is all the time. I have plenty to think about, I guess, cause I'm always thinking. Maybe I care too much about the people I see, like the people in here, washing loads of clothes, folding, whatever- maybe I judge them or something, cause I like to think I know them, can figure them out. It feels right, what I guess about people: this guy hes a little slow, has a job but it doesn't pay very much, something simple like stock boy or some kind of clerk. I guess laundromats are easy because the people that are in them are the kind of people that don't own washing machines, and thats a specific kind of type. Ive been trying to figure this woman out for a little, she got dropped off by somebody and has more clothes than could just be hers, and shes just humming to her self the whole, doesn't look around or anything. Those are the people I don't get, the people who don't care whats around them, who the people are.
